I swear my brain works by always compartmentalizing things. It helps me to think straight. Not only does being organized feel good, but it makes life a lot easier. I enjoy being in my home. Yes, I suppose you would call me a home body but I like my home. I like it best when it is clean and organized. There are some quick tips that are easy to implement so that can have your home looking cleaner and more organized than ever before. This article will discuss 8 easy ways to organize your home.
1. Coat and Shoe Organizers
This is the first thing you can add that will help you organize your home. I know I have mentioned this in another blog but living in the Midwest, this is a must. I honestly do not know how I handled not having a good organization system in place for so long. We had one built that fit the space that was right next to the door where the kids come in from being outside.
There are three baskets up top where I keep all of their gloves, hats and scarves. Below the organizer are three drawers on the bottom which house all their shoes. There are 6 hooks to keep coats, umbrellas and backpacks. It is a rule that when the kids come home from school, they put their shoes away and hang up their backpacks and coats. I promise you, there has never been a time where we were running around the house last minute because someone can’t find a shoe or backpack. A Coat and Shoe Organizer or any type of Hall Tree is a must.
2. Empty Counters
This is a must in my home. Only because this is a main area of my home where we congregate 90% of the time. It is really one of the focal points in our home. It is so easy to make counter space a catch all and storage space for all your appliances, bills, cooking containers, spices, coffee maker, recipe books… the list goes on.
I understand it is difficult to do, but it is an essential step you need to take in order to organize your home. I also know some are very limited when it comes to cabinet space. That is completely understandable. A rule of thumb should be, if you don’t use it every day, then store it somewhere else. Also, if it has to be on the counter, then put it in a basket or container. It looks cleaner and more organized. An organized kitchen will equal an organized mind.
3. Tidy Shelves
Shelves tend to be focal points in many homes and it is easy for shelves to get disorganized. If you are using shelves for storage, and not for décor, think about putting baskets on the shelves and creating an organization system that way. This is an easy way to hide the chaos.
4. Covered Storage
Anytime you are storing something whether it be food, blankets, toys, books, whatever, it’s a good idea to make sure it is not see through and also that it is covered. That way, you can have a mess inside the bin but it looks clean because it is covered.
5. Additional Storage
A good idea especially when you are living in a small space, is to optimize the space as much as possible. One way to do this is purchase a good set of bed risers. A good organization system under the bed is key, especially for seasonal clothes. Look around your house, I am sure you can find areas that you can build an organization system or storage system up instead of out. Use the air space!
6. Desk or Filing System
This is key. Even though most people pay their bills online now a days, there are still a lot of companies that mail you bills. Or what about the 50 sheets of paper that my kids drew at school because he/she was feeling extra creative? Or those coupons that you clip out and never use? It is a good idea to have a good filing system so that you don’t end up with a stack of papers and late bills all over the place.
7. Everything Has a Home
All loose things that are not a permanent fixture should have a home. A place where it belongs. If you walk through your house and have this in mind, it will keep you organized and you will rarely ever lose things. A good example of this is your KEYS! You should always have a hook system that houses all your keys. Toys are another good one. If everything has a bin or storage basket or place where it belongs, it makes clean up fairly easy. We purchased one of these toy organizers in two different colors and they house most of our toys!
8. Closet Organizers
They do not have to be expensive and this is an obvious one but you can really maximize your storage space with some closet organizers. Closets are a great place to hide things but it is important to keep those hidden items organized. We purchased these closet organizers for our small closets and they doubled, maybe even tripled the amount of things we could add in our closets.
Summary
All in all, whether you live in a large home or small home it is a good idea to have organization systems. Looking at what needs to be organized or what is driving you crazy is really important in taking the right steps to organize your home. I swear the larger the home the more stuff you have, simply because you can. So, sometimes it is even more difficult when you have a larger home to stay organized.
Small homes have the obvious challenge of lack of room, but never forget air space and keep to these organization tricks. Purchasing organization systems could be costly even for drawer organizers but these are cheap easy ways for just a quick easy fix.
