Having fun stocking your kitchen? Now that we have stocked our pantry and our refrigerator, it’s time to stock our freezer with healthy freezer staples! If you missed my earlier posts click on, “A List of Healthy Pantry Staples” and “A List of Healthy Refrigerator Staples”, for ideas on how to stock your kitchen with healthy foods.

Freezer staples are the easiest to purchase because you never have to worry about wasting money. You can keep most things in the freezer for very long periods of time. With this list however, you will be restocking often if you are meal prepping regularly. I find that I stock my freezer just as often as my refrigerator because I meal plan every day; therefore, my food is constantly rotating out of my freezer and into my refrigerator.
Healthy freezer staples are a must and just as important as refrigerator staples. I especially like my freezer staples for times when I want to grab a quick healthy snack or whip up a quick smoothie.
To see a list of healthy freezer staples to add to your grocery list, see the list at the end of the blog!
Below is a list of healthy freezer staples that you need to stock up on;
Fruits
- Bananas
- Blueberries
- Strawberries
I always, always have frozen fruit in my freezer. Not only are they great to throw into cocktails 🙂 but they stay fresh when frozen, so they last longer. Frozen fruit is great to have ready for those healthy fruit smoothies, which is the perfect healthy snack or meal replacement depending on how you make it.
I also particularly frozen fruit dipped in chocolate. I love slicing bananas and cutting up strawberries and dipping them in dark chocolate. I then place them on pieces of wax paper in snack sized zip lock bags and then place them in the freezer. They make the best dessert/treat.
Meat, Fish and Poultry
- 90% Lean Ground Beef
- Lean Ground Turkey
- Lean Ground Chicken
- Chicken Thighs
- Thinly Sliced Chicken Breasts
- Skinless Fish
I always have an assortment of meat, fish and poultry in my refrigerator. I am not much of a meat eater, but the rest of my family is, so I always have a variety available for really any meal plan. If you are going to stock meats and poultry, always go for the leanest option you can find. I always try to go for at least 90% lean. It is more expensive but makes a big difference. For skinless fish, I tend to choose cod, but it is really your preference.
Vegetables
- Broccoli
- Cauliflower
- Mixed Vegetables
Again, your choice of vegetables, however these are my favorites to keep in my freezer. You can purchase the big bags of frozen broccoli and cauliflower. Inside each big bag are smaller individual bags perfect for a side with dinner. It makes it super easy to throw them into the steamer and steam for 20 minutes. Tip: remember not to steam vegetables too long or they loose their nutrients! I also like frozen cauliflower for when I make cauliflower rice or cauliflower pizza crust.
Meat Substitutes
- Soy Products
- Veggie Burgers
For those of you who do not eat meat, opt to include some soy products and veggie burgers. Just make sure that the veggie burgers are low in sodium. I find I don’t eat frozen veggie burgers mostly because a lot of them contain too much sodium.
Starches
- Ezekiel Bread
By now, you have seen Ezekiel bread in my pantry, refrigerator and freezer. That is because I typically have a loaf in each space in my kitchen. The shelf life is not long for Ezekiel bread so it’s good to have a loaf in your refrigerator and freezer at the very least.
Sweets
- Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels
Aside from your chocolate covered bananas, strawberries or maybe even grapes, I like to keep a bag of semi-sweet chocolate morsels in my freezer. No, not for baking delicious chocolate chip cookies, but for grabbing a pinch when I am having a chocolate craving. They do a good job of satisfying your taste buds when you want something sweet. Just don’t grab too many and be counterproductive because THAT is easy to do with those small morsels! 🙂
Summary
Okay, not only is your freezer now stocked, but so is your entire kitchen! Head over to the “Printable Lists” section of my blog and print off the following lists so that you can bring them to the grocery store or order online. If you are feeling less ambitious, start with one list and add an additional list as you go. Good luck with your healthy eating journey!
